OUR RECS (namely from Josh, Local Guide Google Reviewer & Groom : )
We are so excited to welcome you to Winston-Salem! For those who take advantage of the hotel room blocks, you will find yourself snuggled beside Old Salem, the historic district. Old Salem was settled by the Moravians in 1766. It is the home of beautiful, ancient churches, a delicious, old-fashioned bakery, and Salem College—the oldest women’s college in the United States. Aubry wants to add that, as an alum from a Northeastern women’s college, she refused to believe that the oldest women’s college in the nation was in the Southeast, but a number of cross-checks later, this fact stands undisputed.
You will also be close to Winston-Salem State University (WSSU), an HBCU with thousands of students. Let's go, Rams! And the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) which regularly showcases live performances in dance, drama, film, and music (family link: Ada takes weekly piano lessons here).
Just north of you will be downtown Winston-Salem! There is much to do here. There is a first-class, family-friendly kid’s museum called Kaleideum. There’s an arcade at Camel City BBQ. There’s an art district on Trade Street with galleries, shops, and bars. Aubry addition: there is an awkwardly/impressively-domed building in our skyline, as well as the original prototype for the Empire State Building (true story!).
